Practical guidance to help you stay safe in the digital landscape while engaging with our legal services
Staying Safe Online
Take a Walk on the Safe Side
In today's digital environment, protecting your personal and legal information online is more important than ever. At Celen Chambers, we are committed not only to providing exceptional legal services but also to ensuring that your interactions with us remain secure. This resource center provides essential guidance on safe online practices.
General Guidelines
- Avoid using public terminals (such as Internet cafes) for sending sensitive legal information.
- Be aware of the higher risk of interception during a wireless connection. Only send your sensitive legal information via a wireless hotspot if certain that you have an updated anti-virus and spyware programme and perform regular system scans.
- Never access the site via a link. Rather type the address into the browser address bar or save the address as a 'favorite'.
- Ensure your computer software is up-to-date.
- Install and maintain reputable anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
- Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts and change them regularly.
What's What: Online Terminology
- Browser
- Browser software provides you with the means to view a webpage. Without browser software, you would not be able to surf the Internet.
- Cookies
- Cookies are a collection of information, usually including a username and the current date and time, stored on the local computer of a person using the Internet. It is used by websites to identify users who have previously registered or visited the site.
- Cache
- The cache stores recently viewed webpages and images so that they load faster if you return to the same page. While this improves browsing speed, it can also store sensitive information that others might access on a shared computer.
- Encryption
- Encryption is the process of converting information into a code to prevent unauthorized access. Look for 'https://' and a padlock icon in your browser to ensure a connection is encrypted.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by websites you visit. They serve various purposes, from remembering your login details to tracking your browsing behavior for advertising.
Managing Cookies: All modern browsers allow you to control cookie settings. You can choose to block third-party cookies, delete existing cookies, or receive a notification when a website attempts to place a cookie on your device.
For legal service users: We recommend regularly clearing cookies, especially after accessing sensitive legal portals. Always log out of secure sessions rather than simply closing the browser.
Anti-Spyware Program
This is a program that protects your PC against spyware and helps to keep your computer and personal details secure. e.g. Webroot SecureAnywhere. Spyware is software that secretly monitors your online activities, captures keystrokes, or collects personal information without your consent. It can be installed on your computer without your knowledge, often bundled with free software downloads.
- Install a reputable anti-spyware program and keep it updated
- Run regular system scans, at least weekly
- Be cautious when downloading free software from the Internet
- Read license agreements before installing software
- Keep your operating system and browser updated with security patches
Email Security
Email remains one of the most common vectors for cyber attacks. When communicating with our firm or any legal service provider, exercise caution with email.
Important warnings:
We will never ask you to provide passwords, PINs, or full banking details via email.
Be suspicious of unexpected emails claiming to be from our firm — verify by calling us directly.
Do not open attachments from unknown senders.
When in doubt about the authenticity of a communication, contact our office directly using the phone number from our official website, not one provided in a suspicious email.
Communication with Our Firm
At Celen Chambers, we employ multiple layers of security to protect your confidential information.
Our secure client portal uses bank-grade encryption (256-bit SSL) for all document exchanges.
When we send sensitive documents, we use password-protected files when appropriate. Passwords are communicated through a separate channel (e.g., SMS or phone call).
For highly sensitive matters, we may recommend in-person meetings or secure video conferencing rather than email communication.
If you suspect any security concern related to your case or our communications, contact us immediately.
Your security is a shared responsibility. By following these guidelines and maintaining open communication with our team, we can ensure that your legal matters remain confidential and protected.
